Top 10 Best Flying-Type Pokémon (Best Picks)

Flying Pokémon, whether it’s a mixture of two types or a pure, certainly adds up to needs’ list when composing a team. They make up to 13% of the Pokémon population. In other words, there are about 101 Flying type Pokémon, 99 dual types and 2 single types. Most Flying type Pokémon are either birds or insects, often with an addition of Dragon types. Usually, they are faster than any other type. Despite having so many of Flying type Pokémon, nearly most of them are secondary, with Norma, usually.  Tornadus is the only pure Flying Pokémon, and two, Noibat and Noivern that are half-flying due to evolution. Nevertheless, one would need at least some Flying type Pokémon for a better, competitive play.

10. Noivern

Noivern, first introduced in Generation 6, claiming the name Sound Wave. It’s a Flying, Dragon type. Starting from Noibat and it evolves to Noivern starting at level 48. Noivern flies around on moonless nights and attacks careless preys. It’s best suit is darkness, so nothing can beat it in a battle when it’s dark. Noivern is extremely combative against anything that wanders its way. Along with its abilities Frisk, Infiltrator, and Telepathy, Noivern is rather fast, having Speed of 123. Nonetheless, its other stats though may not pose a great disadvantage, they’re still low comparing to its speed. And Noivern’s weaknesses pose danger, too, as they are multiple—Fairy, Dragon, Ice, and Rock.

9. Togekiss

This Fairy, Flying type Pokémon, first introduced in Generation 4. Togekiss is known as The Jubilee Pokémon. This peaceful Pokémon is the final form of Togepi, and it evolves from Togetic when exposed to a Shiny Stone. As a matter of fact, Togekiss visits peaceful regions, bringing kindness, gifts and sweet blessings upon them. Considering its stats, it’s not that great of a Pokémon, yet it has a great Special Attack of 120 and Special Defense of 115. These combined with its abilities Hustle, Serene Grace and Super luck form a good Pokémon for your team. On the other hand, its Hp and Speed are not that good, mixed with the many weaknesses it has against other types—Electric, Ice, Rock, Steel, and Poison—it forms an obstacle.

8. Charizard

Introduced in Generation 1, this Pokémon known as Flame Pokémon is a Fire,Flying type. Charizard starts out as Charmander, then Charmeleon and it evolves to this state starting at level 36, making it the final form. It can also Mega Evolve into two forms, Mega Charizard X using Charizardite X and Mega Charizard Y using Charizardite Y. Charizard’s hunger for a powerful opponent makes it fly around the sky in search of said opponents. As it looks, it can breathe fire of great heat that it melts everything. Yet, it never uses that against weaker opponents. Charizard has a good Special Attack and Speed, which make a nice combo in a battle, along with its ability Blaze. However, despite its other stats prove as not too shabby, they still affect the way Charizard can be used in battle; its weaknesses against Rock, Electric, and Water types should be considered, too.

7. Gyarados

Introduced in Generation 1, Gyarados is a Water, Flying type Pokémon, also known as the Atrocious Pokémon. Gyarados is acquired starting level 20, as it evolves from the fish looking Magikarp. And it can also Mega Evolve into Mega Gyarados using Gyaradosite. According to its appearance, it’s easily deduced that Gyarados is a mean, violent Pokémon. It’s said that its brain cells experienced a structural transformation when it evolves. Base stats result that Gyarados is useful in both Offense and Defense, as it has 125 for an Attack and 100 in Special Defense. In addition, it has two abilities up its sleeve, Intimidate and Moxie. Despite all that, Gyarados is weak in other areas, along with the disadvantage against Electric and Rock types.

6. Archeops

Archeops is a Rock, Flying type introduced in Generation 5, also known as First Bird Pokémon. This Pokémon starts out with Archen, a ressurcted one from a Plume Fossil, and eventually at level 37 it evolves to Archeops. Archeops is rather intelligent and it cooperates to catch prey. When on the ground, it starts running first and then it flies. Based on its stats, this Pokémon is rather strong if put in Offense, going with 140 Attack, 112 Special Attack, and incredible Speed of 110. It combines that with its ability Defeatist.  However, along with its many weaknesses against other types, such as Water, Rock, Steel… etc, it’s also shabby in Defense and Hp.

5. Articuno

Articuno is known as Freeze Pokémon, introduced in Generation 1. It’s dual type of Ice and Flying. Besides Zapdos and Moltres, it’s one of three Legendary birds of Kanto, which makes Articuno’s status of evolving into or forming any other Pokémon unknown. It’s a legendary bird Pokémon that controls ice. Chills in the air are produced by the flapping of its wings, and when it flies, snow will fall. Articuno is best used in Defense not offense, as it has high stats in both Defense—100— and Special Defense—125. Along with Pressure and Snow Cloak as abilities. However, like it’s said before, its best suit is Defense, otherwise, you’d compromise yourself to Pokémon that will cause plenty of damage. For instance, it’s best to avoid Fire, Steel, Electric and Rock types.

4. Thundurus

Known as Bolt Strike Pokémon is Thundurus, an Electric, Flying type introduced in Generation 5. Thundurus has a second Forme, only activated using Reveal Glass, though it does not evolve into or form any other Pokémon. This Pokémon flies around the Unova region firing off lightning bolts that come from the spikes on its tail. Those spikes discharge immense bolts of lightning. Thundurus has the same advantages of Tornadus and Landorus, same Attack, Special Attack and Speed stats. It has two abilities, Prankster and Defiant. This Electric, Flying type has weaknesses against Ice and Rock types.

3. Tornadus

Tornadus is the only pure Flying type in this list and it was introduced in Generation 5, known as Cyclone Pokémon. Though this Pokémon does not evolve into or form any other Pokémon, like Landorus, it has a second Forme. Activated by Reveal Glass, Tornadus turns from his Incarnate Forme to Therian one, coming out looking like a bird. Tornadus lower half body is wrapped up in a cloud of energy, much like a genie, but it zooms through the sky at 200mph speed. This Pokémon comes out with three benefits, Attack of 115, Special Attack of 125 and Speed of 111. Along with two abilities, Prankster and a hidden one—Defiant. However, Tornadus isn’t suitable enough on Defense for its low stats, in addition with its weaknesses against Electric, Ice and Rock types.

2. Landorus

Introduced in Generation 5, Lanadorus takes the name Abundance Pokémon. It’s a Ground Flying type. While this Pokémon is not known to evolve into or form any other Pokémon, it sure has a second Forme. Therian Forme is only activated using Reveal Glass; so, it’s Incarnate Forme will turn into Therian. Landorus is part of Forces of Nature, serving as a trio master along with Tornadus and Thundurus.

That said, from its name, Landorus is known as The Guardian of the Fields, as it grants bountiful crops. Landorus strong points are not to meddle with. An Attack of 125, Special Attack of 115 and wonderful speed of 101, this Pokémon proves to be useful in offense with a combination of speed and attack stats. However, its HP and Defense don’t get along with the other high stats, so it’s best not to use against Ice and Water types. Landorus has one ability, that being Sand Force.

1. Yveltal

Yveltal is a Dark, Flying type Pokémon, first introduced in Generation 6. Also known as the Destruction Pokémon. This Pokémon is a Legendary, exclusive to Pokémon Y. Along with Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie, and Xerneas, it claimed the title as the first Generation 6 Pokémon revealed to the public. Now, Yveltal may be one of the prettiest looking Pokémon, it’s as its name suggest. This legendary’s pokémons wings and tail feathers, when spread wide, they glow bright crimson and it absorbs the life force of living creatures.

Yveltal does not evolve into or form any other Pokémon. However, its power is not one to take lightly, as it’s, by far, the strongest Flying type. It comes with 126 HP, 131 Attack and Special Attack. Though it looks rather strong, Defense and Speed are not its strong suit, but they’re neither too low nor too high. In addition to its many weaknesses to other types such as Electric and Ice. Yveltal has an ability that is quite useful if you’re a collector of Dark Pokémon.
