The desire to become the best in Poké-world has grown stronger and stronger ever since Pokémon Go became the next best thing. Anyone who wants to become a Gym leader, though it is not explained how to obtain such a thing, there have been pebbles on the road to lead you to have that as a normal job, in some cases, inherit it, or just be assigned by the elite four. Gym leaders are the bosses when it comes to their Pokémon theme, as they make better use of them than any other leader. However, they need to adjust to match their gym level accordingly even if the Pokémon was a highly trained one.
10. Olympia
The person who makes paths with starlight. That pretty much sums up Olympia’s looks, doesn’t it? Olympia is the a psychic type gym leader from Anistar City in the Kalos region. Her first appearance was in Pokemon X and Y. Derived from her city’s name is her gym, which can be accessed in Pokemon X and Y. Olympia’s appearance is a projectile of a galaxy theme with her long cape.
Olympia’s Gym will through the opponent off guard on a loop, as she and her followers are in another dimension inside that loop. She is proved to be very poetic and confusing as she rarely speaks in full, complete sentences, most likely because of her psychic powers, but it leaves the opponent dumbfounded most of the time.
Olympia, though rarely speaks in full sentences, she is rather wise in her speech, using Haiku verses, and her power to predict the future seemed strong enough for them to come true. Most of her famous, powerful statement in the game is, “Create your own path. Let nothing get in your way. Your fate, your future.”
9. Trio Badge Leaders
The Striaton Gym is the official gym of the Striaton city. It has three gym leaders with three different Pokémon types—Cilan, who specializes in Grass-type, Chili, Fire-type, and finally Cress using the Water-type pokémons. It is said that trainers who defeat them receive the Trio Badge.
Though they may seem insignificant and not so strong, but they are the first trio gym leaders who specialize in different Pokémon type, which may cause a problem if one didn’t use a strategy when fighting them
The Trio Badge leaders are first introduced in the anime in Tripe Leaders, Team Threats, as they appear in a café where they work as butlers. Later on in the anime, Cilan joins Ash in a Pokémon journey and to learn a few more tricks as a connoisseur.
8. Skyla
Just as the nickname states “The high-flying girl” one can take a guess and know she’s the flying-type gym leader.
Skyla is the gym leader of Mistralton City’s gym in Unova region.
It appears to be that her gym is the sixth gym to be challeneged by a player, because if you beat her in a battle, or her so-called air-battles, she’ll reward you with Jet Badge.
Her first appearance was in Pokémon Black and White. However, even though she uses the flying-type Pokémon, she also owns her own airport and she works as a pilot!
7. Elesa
As her appearance and nickname suggest “The shining Beauty” Elesa specializes in the electric-type Pokémon. Elesa is the gym leader of Nimbasa City’s gym in Unova region.
Her first appearance was in Pokémon Black and White. Besides, Elesa is a supermodel in addition to her being a gym leader. She rewards the player who defeats her with a Bolt Badge.
Elesa personality can be quite deceiving if one would judge based on the anime and Pokémon trailers, as she appears to be a cheery, bubbly, outgoing person other than her real self, which is portrayed as a calm, stoic character. Elesa, being a supermodel, likes to show off her skills in a sense of style instead of just the plain, old style.
6. Cheren
Cheren’s appearance can give you a lot about his personality and his liking, just by taking a glimpse of him. Cheren starts out as a friend and rival in BW. He is from Nuvema Town from Unova region. Later in BW2, he makes an entrance again, this time as gym leader! His preferred type of Pokémon is the Normal-type, and he picks the Pokémon that has a type advantage against yours. He’d often challenge the player to battles, and if they were to defeat him, he’d give Basic Badge as a reward.
His personality is very serious and studious. Despite Cheren’s rather stoic attitude, he is kind and mild-mannered—polite to the player.
This character’s main goal is to become the champion.
5. Clemont
Clemont may have a jumpsuit that looks like it’s from Ghostbusters, but that’s mainly to his passion for science and invention. He is a gym leader from Lumoise City in Kalos. His special type if Electric-type; he made his first appearance in X and Y. if the player were to win against him in a battle, they’d get a Voltage Badge.
Clemont’s appearance, despite it being rather normal, he is very intelligent and passionate about science for such a young age.
He is considered a child prodigy inventor. He’s not a sore loser, as he accepts defeat and loves new challenges that come his way. However, despite him beinga gym leader, he’s not interested in becoming the most power trainer.
4. Iris
Iris is a cute gym leader from Unova region. Her hometown is Blackthorn city, yet she lives in Opelucid City. She specializes in using dragon-type Pokémon. Her reward to the player if she is defeated is the Legend Badge.
Iris grows from a child that tames dragons in Pokémon Black and White, then as a grown up and a Champion in BW2.
Iris’ adventurous personality kept her as an interesting character, a hyper, tomboyish one that eventually became a champion. She has a passion for Dragon Pokémon as she loves playing and training them. Exactly as she appears, she is a kind, helpful person who despises evil acts.
3. Brock
In the anime world, our life lesson is to fear those characters that always have their eyes closed. As a matter of fact, looks are deceiving when it comes to them.
First they appear weak, just as Brock is displayed in his first appearances in the anime and the game, mainly because he is the first gym leader Ash comes across. Brock is a gym leader from Pewter City Gym, and holds the Boulder Badge for the trainers that are able to defeat him. Brock specializes in Rock-type Pokémon.
However, despite being portrayed as weak, he has strong Pokémon, but due to not wanting to break the rules of Pewter City gym, he has to remain as he is.
2. Misty
Misty is probably the first character we learned to love during the anime, and no one can bring down the OTP when it comes to Ash and Misty.
In comparison between the game and the anime, there is a huge difference in clothing and appearance, but the same character and goals. Misty is the gym leader at the Cerulean City Gym, and specializes in Water-type Pokémon. Her reward after defeat is Cascade Badge.
Misty is, just as the anime, a tomboy, competitive and brave. She’s rather blunt about what lurks around in her mind. She classifies in the second position, not just for her personality, but because she rather competent as a trainer and a gym leader, so what’s not to like?
1. Giovanni
Giovanni is both a gym leader for Viridian City’s gym and the boss or the head of the criminal organization Team Rocket. As any gym leader, Giovanni holds Earth Badge for the trainers that are able to defeat him, and he specializes in Ground-type Pokémon. Giovanni classes the great evil mastermind that holds the anime Pokémon together, though he vanished completely without any trace in Generation II games, leaving behind no clues but a pang of confusion. He strives, lusts for power, but that alone couldn’t make him dangerous. He has the rarest; most powerful Pokémon existed ready at his command.
He’s considered as yakuza of Pokémon, since he steals trainers’ Pokémon, only the strongest, fastest, and most worthy ones of his attention. His stinky aura that lurks all around him makes him fearful, thus the head of Team Rocket. As well, as his creation of the strongest Pokémon, Mewtwo.
There are, as well, others, plenty of other gym leaders that didn’t make it the cut. Nevertherless, it doesn’t mean they’re not as strong or as loved as. So, an opponent doesn’t have to be very strong to make the fight or the battle worth it. And especially when it comes to anime.
The Pokémon game provides an opportunity for players to become gym leaders, owning strong, fast, dark Pokémon they wish. Though, I suggest that you do not rely on strength alone to defeat your opponents. But also consider using other techniques and strategies. In short, be smart, think before you act, or should I say battle!
